CHEYENNE, Wyo., April 12, 2012

— April is National Safe Digging Month, and as the weather warms and the gardening and construction season begins, Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power reminds all customers and contractors to call 811 for a utility line locate before digging.

One Call of Wyoming is the state’s utility line locating service that is provided free of charge by Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power and other participating utilities in Wyoming. (A fee may be charged for customer-owned non-utility lines). The phone number for One Call of Wyoming is 811, or you can also call 800-849-2476 statewide.

After One Call of Wyoming receives a request, it notifies all affected utilities. Utility representatives are then sent to mark the location of any underground lines and facilities including water, sewer, storm sewer, gas, electric and cable TV. Each line is color coded. Yellow paint or flags, for example, mark the location of pipelines carrying natural gas, steam, petroleum or gaseous materials.

Cheyenne Light serves its customers through a 1,212-mile underground network of natural gas pipes and almost two thousand miles of underground electric line. And remember, just because the natural gas distribution system or underground electric lines aren’t visible doesn’t mean they’re not there. Although striking underground utility lines is a problem any time, the frequency increases during warmer months because homeowners are working in their yards and contractors are completing outdoor projects.

To avoid costly damage — and most importantly, to be safe — a single call to One Call of Wyoming before digging helps everyone avoid the possibility of serious or fatal injury, disruption of service to a home, a building or an entire area of the community, and the considerable expense of repairing underground utilities.

The Wyoming Legislature passed a law in 2010 called the Wyoming Underground Facilities Notification Act. This law says that everyone who excavates or disturbs the surface of the ground must first contact One Call of Wyoming two business days before starting the project to locate all underground utilities located. This legislation includes — but is not limited to — contractors, homeowners and personal property owners and includes commercial projects and also home projects such as planting a garden or tree or putting in a fence.

Besides having to pay for costly repairs if you damage underground facilities, if you don’t call for a locate and do strike an underground utility, you could be assessed a fine ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 for damaging the underground infrastructure.

Cheyenne Light reminds you to be safe and ensure the safety of everyone around you by calling 811 before you dig. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s the law.

Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power Company

Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power Company, a subsidiary of Black Hills Corp. (NYSE: BKH), serves 40,900 electric customers and 33,900 natural gas customers in the greater Cheyenne, Wyo., area. Black Hills Corp. — a diversified energy company with a tradition of exemplary service and a vision to be the energy partner of choice — is based in Rapid City, S.D., with corporate offices in Denver and Omaha, Neb. Black Hills Corp. serves 763,300 natural gas and electric utility customers in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming, and its non-regulated businesses generate wholesale electricity, produce natural gas, oil and coal, and market energy. Black Hills’ 2,200 employees partner to produce results that improve life with energy.
You can go out to eat and support a good cause at the same time! Dine for Hunger is a charitable dining experience to benefit Needs, Inc., a local food bank and crisis services agency serving Laramie County.

It is simple: Patrons go to any partnering restaurant and place an order. The partnering restaurants pledge to donate a percentage of the day’s profit to Needs, Inc. If patrons want to give above and beyond the percentage of their order, please ask the wait staff or manager how to do that. Some restaurants will have collection boxes. Others will have donation envelopes you can give to the manager or mail in yourself (checks are best if mailing). Some restaurants will have both.

Watch for ads in the Traders, Wyoming Tribune-Eagle, Warren Sentinel & Pine Bluffs Post. Also, stay tuned to your local radio station or check www.needsinc.org for the most up to date list of partnering restaurants.

Thank you in advance for your support!
